Better Sleep Starts Tonight

A free, no-purchase starter guide from Samantha, a pediatric sleep coach. Try these steps tonight — and when you're ready for a plan built around your child, the door is open.

Try this tonight

You don't need a perfect plan to start. You need a repeatable one. Tonight, keep it simple:

  1. 1Pick a bedtime you can repeat. Consistency matters more than the exact hour.
  2. 2Dim the lights about 30 minutes before bed — light is the strongest sleep cue your child has.
  3. 3Run the same 3–5 steps in the same order: for example bath, pajamas, teeth, book, cuddle, lights out.
  4. 4Make the room boring: dark, cool-ish, and quiet or steady white noise.
  5. 5Respond the same way every time tonight. One calm, repeated response beats five different ones.

Nights 1–3: Set the stage

  • Keep the routine short and repeatable — 20 to 30 minutes is plenty.
  • Give a transition warning before the routine starts: “Five more minutes of play, then bath.”
  • Offer one or two small choices inside the routine: which pajamas, which book.
  • Expect pushback. New routines feel wrong before they feel normal.

Nights 4–7: Hold the line gently

  • Meet real needs — hunger, comfort, fear — then return to the plan.
  • Use the same calm phrase at lights-out every night: “I love you, it's time to rest.”
  • Avoid changing three things at once; pick one adjustment and give it a few nights.
  • One hard night is information, not a new pattern. Watch for trends, not single nights.

Quick sleep-environment check

Before changing anything else, check the room:

  • Dark enough that you can't easily see your hand — or a dim amber night-light if full dark is scary
  • Steady background sound if household noise is unpredictable
  • Comfortable sleepwear and bedding without irritating tags or seams
  • Nothing in the crib except a fitted sheet for babies; a safe comfort item for older toddlers
  • A predictable last step your child can recognize every single night
